Don’t forget, this Sunday is Mother’s Day so if you haven’t already booked a table somewhere – you’ll need to get a move on! You know best when it comes to what your Mum likes but if you need a bit of inspiration, here are ten Mum-friendly options for you to take a look at.
Min Jiang – If your Mum loves Chinese food, head for Min Jiang where their exotic five-course menu is guaranteed to impress. Priced at £45, it will include dishes like Gong Bao chicken, king prawns in black bean sauce, Sichuan hot and sour soup, and – of course – their legendary wood-fired Beijing duck. For dessert, save room for the sweet chilli and lychee pannacotta with pistachio crunch. If you can’t get a table on the 22nd, try for the 24th when the restaurant is hosting a five course dinner and whisky tasting with expert Roger Mallindine.
Chilango – If you’re strapped for cash, head for the new Upper Street branch where your Mum can claim a free burrito! (Plus, if you work in the area, they can deliver your lunch to desk between 11am and 9:15pm – perfect if you’re working late).
Mela – If you fancy adding some spice to Mothering Sunday, try any branch of Mela where your Mum can eat for free! Their menu includes authentic Indian dishes like Luft-e-Dariya (tiger prawns marinated in saffron, caraway seeds and fresh coriander); Ameenabadi Aloo (potatoes stuffed with paneer and spices); and the delicious Seafood Moilee, a Keralan speciality of fresh mussels, scallops, prawns, squid and fresh fish simmered in saffron and coconut curry. Mains start at just £4.95 so you can afford to treat the rest of the family as well!
Corrigan’s – Having won the hearts (and stomachs) of critics and diners alike, Corrigan’s is now open on Sundays for lunch and dinner. If your Mum likes game and other hearty British dishes, she’ll love it here. The Sunday lunch menu is priced at £27 per head and includes traditional roast rib of beef, as well as a selection of child-friendly dishes.
Fika – To coincide with Waffle Day in Sweden, Fika on Brick Lane is celebrating with a week-long wafflefest from Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th March. Why not delay Mother’s Day by a day or two and then head East to feast on all kinds of sweet and savoury combos. Diners can start with tasty reindeer salami, Swedish sausage or classic cheese and mushroom, and then move on to the sweet options like honey, caramel, chocolate or homemade apple sauce, cream and cinnamon.
Head for Hampstead – The Everyman, one of London’s smartest cinemas, is putting on a special Mum-friendly screening on Mamma Mia, including a free glass of wine. If you’re in the area, why not see the movie and then tuck into a steak at Gaucho or Indian tapas at Meghna? If pan-Asian cuisine is more your thing, try XO where they’re serving up a three course set menu for just £25.
The Dining Room at Dukes – At the elegant Dukes Hotel near Green Park, diners can enjoy a three course menu for just £30 per head, including a glass of rosé Champagne and a box of chocolates for your Mum to take home. The menu includes classic dishes like prawn cocktails; grilled fillet of salmon with fennel; and roast sirloin of Galloway beef with all the trimmings. For dessert, there is a milk chocolate delice with poached pear; a selection of cheeses; and rhubarb and almond tart with Cornish clotted cream.
Le Pont de la Tour – All Mums are entitled to a complimentary glass of Champagne, chocolates and a bouquet of flowers to accompany Head Chef Lee Bennett’s modern French three course menu. Feel free to bring the kids along too, as the face-painting and entertainers will keep them busy while you enjoy your lunch.
The Botanist – After some shopping on the Kings Road, head for The Botanist on Sloane Square for brunch, lunch or a relaxed afternoon tea. If your Mum is partial to a cocktail or two, she’ll love it here. We recommend their signature Sloane No. 7 – a decadent blend of Plymouth sloe gin, damson gin, fresh blueberries and sugar syrup charged with Joseph Perrier Champagne.
The Providores & Tapa Room - If you prefer to do your shopping in ultra-chic Marylebone, why not start the day with a leisurely brunch? The Tapa Room menu features full-flavoured fusion dishes like grilled chorizo on a courgette and potato gratin with a soft boiled egg; a full organic fry-up; and sautéed mushrooms with parmesan and jamon on toasted sourdough. Figure-conscious Mums will love the exotic fruit salads and fresh smoothies.
If all else fails, go for afternoon tea – Yes, it’s an obvious choice but how can you resist when London does it so well? The Lanesborough won the UK Tea Guild’s ‘Best Afternoon Tea’ award this year, but you still can’t go wrong at The Dorchester, The Ritz, Brown’s or The Goring.
