In the city-eating office, we’re big fans of the USA. Not only for the food-driven cities like New York and the generous portion sizes, but also for their obscene junk food. Deep-fried Coke anyone? A McGriddle? Or maybe just some cheese fries covered in ranch dressing? Come on, they’re only 2900 calories!
We thought nothing could top the Luther Burger (a cheeseburger with a glazed donut bun), but this week we were introduced to the super-sweet world of Cinnabons. At first glance, these massive iced cinnamon buns look fairly harmless but a couple of bites later and you’re well on your way to a sugar coma. If you like Krispy Kreme donuts, you’re going to love these things.
Before the box arrived on our doorstep, we had never heard of Cinnabons but a bit of furtive Googling revealed that there are over 700 branches worldwide, mostly in the US and the Middle East. They aren’t mass produced junk though – each cinnamon bun is handmade on site and then topped with sweet cream frosting after baking. They even use the legendary Makara cinnamon from Indonesia, which – if you’re a spice nerd – you’ll know is the best you can get.
The result? A moist, light chunk of doughy goodness, slathered in sticky icing. They’re best served warm but we devoured ours fresh out of the box and there were no complaints. Admittedly, they’re not ideal if you’re watching your waistline but for something sweet to dunk in your morning coffee, they’re ideal. You could power an entire IT team for days on these things. (We did!)
You can pick up a classic Cinnabon for £3.50 or a box of four for £10 at their shiny new London branches on Oxford Street, Queensway or inside the Trocadero. Smaller appetites can opt for super-cute Minibons and sugar junkies can go all out with a box of Caramel Pecanbons. Just keep a wet wipe handy – they’re sticky!
